Corded Scanners

Corded barcode scanners, as the name implies, are connected to a computer via an interface tether. They’re commonly used in grocery stores, retail and logistics. They're also the most common and least expensive scanner type. While their connection makes them easier to implement than their cordless counterparts, they’re physically limited and have no real-time access to the data they scan.

Cordless Scanners

Cordless barcode scanners connect to their computers using Bluetooth and radio technologies. They’re completely wireless, allowing users full mobility when scanning. They’re commonly used in retail, warehouses, healthcare and manufacturing, and typically offer two scanning modes:

  • Batch memory: With batch memory, the scanner stores information internally. It then either sends the information to the connected computer in real time or uploads it all at once when it returns to its cradle.

  • Direct pairing: With direct pairing, the barcode scanner is paired with a third-party device. This allows it to upload information without returning to the cradle.

As stated, cordless scanners allow users to scan without being limited by a physical tether. They don’t require a wireless computer to function and won’t impact existing software systems. However, their range isn’t limitless, and they tend to be more expensive than corded scanners.

Factors to Consider

  • Intended use: The most obvious factor to consider when choosing between corded and cordless scanners is what you’re going to use them for.   • Security: Both corded and cordless scanners have security features in order to protect your data; however, they also possess risks and protection unique to their designs. Corded scanners require a physical connection to a wired network point in order for someone to hack them, while a cordless scanner can be hacked remotely. However, a properly configured cordless scanner can be just as difficult to access as a corded one, if not more so due to the introduction of wireless encryption and remote network monitoring.

  • Durability: While both corded and cordless scanners come in rugged models, they tend to experience different risks. Cordless scanners are at a higher risk of being dropped due to constantly being picked up or traded between employees. A corded scanner, meanwhile, most likely won’t be handed off as much, and can even avoid hitting the floor when dropped, as long as the cord isn’t too long. However, the strain of the fall still lands on the cord, meaning it can fray and break down over time.

  • Budget: Ultimately, your budget will have final say in which scanner you choose. As previously stated, cordless scanners are typically more expensive than corded ones, so even if you’d prefer a cordless scanner, it may be outside of your budget. This is especially true if you’re purchasing multiple scanners at once.
