Why You Should Give Thanks for Service Contracts

Picture this: it’s a busy time of year for your business. Your printers are running at full speed to keep up with your label needs. Suddenly, a table leg gives out, sending your printer crashing to the floor. Upon examination, you find that it’s cracked and will no longer turn on.

You need to get it repaired as soon as possible, but you’re not sure if you’ll be able to afford it. You’re about to despair, but then you remember: you have a service contract.

What are Service Contracts?

A service contract is, in essence, an insurance policy for your device. They give you access to direct tech support from the manufacturer, as well as coverage for broken devices.

There are many kinds of service contracts available. Barcode Factory offers a variety through different manufacturers, including:

  • Non-comp: While the name may make it sound like a substandard coverage plan, a non-comprehensive (or non-comp) service contract is still a valid form of protection. These are basic contracts that cover common repair scenarios. While what counts as non-comp can change from business to business, a common feature is not paying for replacement parts.

  • Comprehensive: If a non-comp service contract is a basic protection plan, then a comprehensive service contract is the deluxe plan. They cover most maintenance scenarios, if not all of them, and usually cover the cost of replacement parts. They also usually cover instances of “abuse” where the owner is directly at fault for the damage, whether through aggression or negligence.

  • On-site: While the specifics of an on-site service contract vary, they share one common factor: they cover support and maintenance on-location, instead of requiring you to take the device to a shop or ship it.

Note: The specifics of service contracts vary from business to business. A comprehensive contract may not cover every scenario; likewise, one non-comp plan may cover more than another one. Be sure to fully read the specifications of your service contract before you purchase it so you understand what it will and won’t cover.

Why You Should Purchase a Service Contract

You may not see the value in any service contract that isn’t fully comprehensive, but even a simple service contract can be a valuable safety net for your device. A service contract can cover tech support, repairs and even replacement parts, depending on what the plan covers. Without one, you’ll be financially responsible for every part of your device’s repair or replacement, regardless of how or when it happened.
